Florida regulates individual elevator workers through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation's Bureau of Elevator Safety, which issues an Elevator Certificate of Competency to the person and a Certified Elevator Technician registration on top of it, rather than through a general trades or contractor board.
| Requirements | Section 399.01, Florida Statutes, defines the elevator certificate of competency as a credential issued by the division to an individual who successfully completes an examination prescribed by rule and pays a nonrefundable $50 fee. The Bureau's professional licensing page states an applicant qualifies either by proof of a degree in mechanical engineering, or by four years of verified experience constructing, maintaining, servicing, or repairing elevators or other conveyances combined with one of: passing the Certificate of Competency examination, completing a registered elevator mechanics apprenticeship, or proof of licensure or certification by another United States jurisdiction with standards substantially equal to or more stringent than Florida's. A Certified Elevator Technician registration requires an existing Certificate of Competency plus general liability insurance of $100,000 per occurrence and $300,000 aggregate. A Certified Elevator Inspector must hold the qualified elevator inspector credential prescribed by ASME (QEI). |
| Reciprocity | Florida accepts proof of licensure or certification by a state or local jurisdiction in the United States having standards substantially equal to or more stringent than those of chapter 399 as a qualifying route to the Certificate of Competency, in place of the examination. |
