Michigan licenses individual elevator workers as Elevator Journeypersons through the Bureau of Construction Codes at the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, and state law bars anyone from entering an elevator hoistway or machine room unless licensed, supervised by a licensed journeyman, or commissioned as an inspector.
| Requirements | Under the Elevator Licensing Act, Act 333 of 1976 (MCL 338.2155), the work of installation, alteration, maintenance, repair, servicing, inspecting, adjusting or testing of a covered elevator must be done by a person licensed as an elevator journeyman, or by helpers under the immediate supervision of a licensed elevator journeyman, and a person entering an elevator hoistway or machine room for any reason other than an emergency must be a licensed elevator journeyman, a supervised helper, or a commissioned special or general inspector. The Bureau of Construction Codes states that an Elevator Journeyperson's License requires three years of continuous employment as a supervisor of elevator construction or service, or as an elevator constructor, serviceman, maintenance man, or repairman, with up to one year of credit available for a degree in electrical or mechanical engineering from a recognized college or university, plus passage of the examination. An Elevator Contractor's License requires five years of experience as an elevator constructor or journeyperson or the equivalent, a detailed resume, a sworn affidavit, and passage of the examination. The Elevator Certificate of Competency for a general elevator inspector requires three years of experience in elevator construction, one or more written references certifying elevator industry experience, and passage of a written and oral examination; the special elevator inspector certificate requires three years of experience designing, installing, maintaining, or inspecting elevators on the same terms. Examinations are conducted by PSI. |
| Reciprocity | Not addressed on the board's published pages as a general provision. The Bureau's Licensing Section publishes a Military Examination Waiver Procedure available only to members of the armed forces or uniformed services, honorably discharged veterans, and their dependents who hold a valid license or registration in another state. |
| Renewal | MCL 338.2157 provides that an elevator journeyman's license expires one year after the date of issue and, unless renewed within 60 days thereafter, is revoked. Renewals are processed through the Bureau's Accela system. The Bureau's published elevator licensing pages do not state a continuing education requirement for elevator journeypersons. |
