| Requirements | P.L. 2012, c. 71 (N.J.S.A. 45:14H-1 et seq.) created the Elevator, Escalator, and Moving Walkway Mechanics Licensing Board within the Division of Consumer Affairs in the Department of Law and Public Safety. The law requires an applicant to have been employed within the State in at least one of the elevator, escalator, and moving walkway trade businesses for a period of three years next preceding the application date, and to pass a licensing examination; passage of the National Elevator Industry Educational Program examination satisfies the examination requirement. The board's applications page lists an online Application for an Elevator Mechanic's License together with an Elevator Mechanics License Certification for Practical Experience form, a reinstatement application, and an application to reactivate an inactive license. Enforcement of the licensing requirement began February 1, 2020 after a statutory grandfathering period. |
| Reciprocity | The law permits the board to grant a license without examination to an applicant licensed in another state, provided that equal reciprocity is provided for New Jersey licensed mechanics by the law of the applicant's domiciliary state and provided further that the domiciliary state's standards are equal to or comparable to those of New Jersey. |
| Renewal | Elevator mechanics' licenses are renewed biennially on application, payment of the renewal fee and renewal of the bond. Renewal without reexamination requires application within 30 days of expiration. Eight hours of instruction must be completed within the one year immediately preceding any license renewal. |
