Texas does not issue any individual elevator mechanic license: the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation registers elevator contractors and elevator inspectors, and mechanics perform elevator work under a registered elevator contractor rather than holding a state credential of their own.
| Requirements | Any person that performs installation, alteration, testing, repair or maintenance of an elevator, escalator or related equipment must be registered with the Department as an elevator contractor. Contractor registration requires an application, a $115 fee, proof of general liability insurance of at least $1,000,000 per occurrence for bodily injury or death and $500,000 per occurrence for property damage, and designation of at least one but not more than two responsible parties. A responsible party designee must have a minimum of three years of elevator contractor experience related to elevator installation, repair and maintenance. Elevator inspector registration requires an application, a $50 fee, a current QEI (Qualified Elevator Inspector) certification from an ANSI accredited certifying organization, and completion of a department required orientation. There is no application or form for an individual elevator mechanic or technician credential in the program's published forms list. |
| Reciprocity | Not applicable, Texas licenses no individual elevator mechanic. Under Health and Safety Code chapter 754 the only individual credential is the Registered Elevator Inspector (§ 754.017); mechanic-level work is regulated at company level through contractor registration (§ 754.0171) with a Responsible Party who must have at least three years of experience (§ 754.0173), which is not a personal mechanic licence. For the roles that do exist, § 754.025 makes the Department of Licensing and Regulation's general alternative-qualifications statutes (Occupations Code §§ 51.401 and 51.4041) applicable, but TDLR's own reciprocity inventory, 'Removing Barriers for Out-of-State Licensees at a Glance', does not list elevator or escalator among the programmes with an active reciprocity agreement. Note that a section number sometimes cited elsewhere for an 'Elevator Mechanic Registration', § 754.0165, does not exist in current enacted law. |
| Renewal | Both the elevator contractor registration and the elevator inspector registration carry a 12 month term. A contractor registration must be renewed before it expires, with a grace period extending to 18 months. Responsible parties must complete 8 hours of department approved continuing education covering state law, the administrative code, ethics or technical requirements. Registered elevator inspectors must complete department mandated training to renew. |
