Requirements, license levels, and the issuing authority, sourced from Alabama's official board.
Alabama does not license individual sprinkler fitters; it requires the fire protection sprinkler contractor to hold a State Fire Marshal's Permit, issued in the contractor's name with a named certificate holder who must have passed the NICET Fire Protection Layout Technician Level III competency test. Local building officials must accept a valid State Fire Marshal's permit as proof of competency and may not add their own competency test.
| Requirements | Section 34-33-3 makes it unlawful for any individual, partnership, corporation, association or joint venture to engage in the business of installation, repair, alteration, addition, maintenance or inspection of a fire protection sprinkler system in the state except in conformity with the chapter, with an exemption for system owners who employ registered professional fire protection engineers and skilled workers maintaining systems on their employer's own premises for the owner's use only. Under Section 34-33-4 the applicant submits a completed application on State Fire Marshal forms with a fee of $200.00 and designates a proposed certificate holder, providing written proof that the individual has passed the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technology (NICET) competency test as a Fire Protection Layout Technician Level III; a copy of the NICET letter of notification is sufficient proof. Section 34-33-5 requires the State Fire Marshal to issue the permit within 30 days once the fee is paid, the NICET proof is provided, and the proposed certificate holder is found to be a responsible managing owner, partner, officer or employee of the contractor. Section 34-33-6 limits a certificate holder to one contractor at a time, requires notice to the State Fire Marshal within 30 days if the certificate holder leaves, and gives the contractor nine months to designate a replacement before the permit is revoked. Section 34-33-8 requires a certified contractor to deliver a copy of the State Fire Marshal's permit to the local building official, who may not impose any other requirement to prove competency, though normal local license and permit fees still apply. |
| Reciprocity | Section 34-33-4 provides that the State Fire Marshal shall issue a State Fire Marshal's permit, upon receipt of the application and fee, to a fire protection sprinkler contractor who has a current state permit from another state if that state has entered into an agreement of reciprocity with the State of Alabama. |
| Renewal | Section 34-33-7 provides that the State Fire Marshal's permit expires annually at midnight on September 30, that the contractor must submit a renewal application at least 30 days prior with the renewal fee, and that failure to renew before expiration makes the permit null and void with no grace period; work may not resume until a new permit is issued. The chapter states no continuing education requirement. |
