Requirements, license levels, and the issuing authority, sourced from New York's official board.
New York has no statewide fire sprinkler licence: the Department of State's Division of Licensing Services list of the 36 occupations it licenses contains no fire sprinkler, sprinkler fitter or fire suppression contractor entry, so licensing is municipal, most notably New York City's Master Fire Suppression Piping Contractor licence.
New York issues no fire sprinkler fitter license, so there are no state license levels. What applies instead is set out below.
| Requirements | There is no state fire sprinkler licence to apply for. The Department of State's Division of Licensing Services publishes the full set of occupations it licenses or registers, and the list returns 36 results, none of which is a fire sprinkler, sprinkler fitter, fire suppression piping or fire protection contractor licence; the only fire-related entry is Security or Fire Alarm Installer, which covers alarm systems rather than sprinkler piping. Sprinkler installation is instead governed by the Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and enforced by local code enforcement officials, and any licensing requirement for the installer comes from the municipality. New York City, for example, requires a Master Fire Suppression Piping Contractor licence from the NYC Department of Buildings, issued in Class A, B and C, to perform fire suppression piping work as defined in section 28-401.3 of the Administrative Code. |
| Reciprocity | Not applicable at the state level, New York issues no state licence for this trade, so there is no credential to which reciprocity could attach. The Department of State's Division of Building Standards and Codes states that issues regarding licensing of contractors or electricians are not handled by the Division, and New York does not issue a state-level contractor licence; licensing, where it exists, is handled locally. New York City separately requires a licensed Master Fire Suppression Piping Contractor and various Certificates of Fitness for sprinkler work performed in the five boroughs, and the Department of Buildings page for that credential makes no mention of reciprocity with other jurisdictions. A bill to create a state board and an explicit reciprocity clause for sprinkler fitter and fire suppression system inspector licences (S6761/S6761B) was introduced but remains in committee and is not enacted law; it should not be read as current New York law. |
| Renewal | There is no statewide fire sprinkler credential to renew. Where a municipal licence applies it carries its own term; the NYC Master Fire Suppression Piping Contractor licence, for example, runs three years with a $150 renewal fee. |
| Notes | New York has no statewide fire sprinkler licence: the Department of State's Division of Licensing Services list of the 36 occupations it licenses contains no fire sprinkler, sprinkler fitter or fire suppression contractor entry, so licensing is municipal, most notably New York City's Master Fire Suppression Piping Contractor licence. |
