Wisconsin licenses fire sprinkler work at both the company and the individual level: state rule bars anyone from installing, maintaining or repairing an automatic fire sprinkler system without a Department of Safety and Professional Services credential, and the individual trade licence is the Journeyman Automatic Fire Sprinkler Fitter.
| Requirements | Wisconsin Administrative Code section SPS 305.50, under Wis. Stat. sections 145.15(4), 145.165 and 145.175, provides that no person may install, maintain or repair automatic fire sprinkler systems unless the person holds a DSPS licence or registration as an Automatic Fire Sprinkler Contractor, a Journeyman Sprinkler Fitter, an Automatic Fire Sprinkler System Apprentice, an Automatic Fire Sprinkler Contractor Maintenance or an Automatic Fire Sprinkler Fitter Maintenance. A credential is not required to repair, replace or maintain electrical supervisory devices on existing systems. The annual inspection and testing activities required by SPS chapter 314 also require one of those credentials, or registration as an Automatic Fire Sprinkler System Tester or Tester Learner. Under SPS 305.51 the licensed Automatic Fire Sprinkler Contractor is responsible for each installation, and under SPS 305.52 journeyman work is performed under the general supervision of a licensed contractor. A Journeyman Automatic Fire Sprinkler Fitter applicant must have completed an automatic fire sprinkler system apprenticeship program recognised under Wis. Stat. chapter 106 or the federal Department of Labor, upload a letter from the Wisconsin Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards confirming it, and pass the examination. A contractor applicant must satisfy one of four routes: at least 1,000 hours of experience per year for at least three consecutive years as a licensed Journeyman Automatic Fire Sprinkler Fitter; graduation from an accredited four-year university or college with a degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering or another approved engineering curriculum related to automatic fire sprinklers; at least 1,000 hours per year for at least seven years in automatic fire sprinkler design or installation, where each full-time semester in a relevant program counts as 500 hours up to a maximum of 3,000 hours and three years; or a NICET Level III certification in fire protection or automatic fire sprinkler system layout. All applications and fees go through the LicensE portal at license.wi.gov, and examination eligibility is granted after the application and documents are reviewed. |
| Reciprocity | Wisconsin's reciprocity provision, Wis. Admin. Code SPS 305.47, is expressly limited to electricians, electrical apprentices, electrical contractors and electrical inspectors and does not extend to sprinkler credentials. The automatic fire sprinkler subchapter, SPS 305.50 (installers), 305.51 (contractors) and 305.52 (journeyman fitters), contains no reciprocity, endorsement or out-of-state credential provision, and requires Wisconsin's own examination under SPS 305.09 plus an apprenticeship recognised under ch. 106, Stats. No national-certification substitution such as NICET is provided for. Note for accuracy: a claim circulating on non-official sites that Wisconsin maintains bilateral sprinkler-fitter reciprocity with Minnesota and Iowa is not supported by the primary rule text and should not be relied on. |
| Renewal | The Automatic Fire Sprinkler Contractor, Automatic Fire Sprinkler Contractor Maintenance, Automatic Fire Sprinkler Fitter Maintenance and Journeyman Automatic Fire Sprinkler Fitter credentials run four years and renew on June 30; the Automatic Fire Sprinkler System Tester credential runs four years and renews on the date of issuance. Renewal fees are $2,000 for the contractor licence, $180 for the journeyman fitter licence, $400 for contractor maintenance, $60 for fitter maintenance and $180 for the system tester registration, with a $200 reinstatement fee. The Automatic Fire Sprinkler System Apprentice and Tester Learner registrations run one year from the date of issuance. Under SPS 305.52, renewal of a journeyman licence expiring after June 30, 2010 requires at least 24 hours of acceptable continuing education, and the same 24 hour requirement applies to the contractor licence; system testers require 12 hours under SPS 305.56. |
