| Requirements | Louisiana licenses the contracting entity, not the individual worker. The Board's classification list defines Heat, Air Conditioning, Ventilation, Duct Work, and Refrigeration as the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration, coolers, freezers and ice rinks, and states that a licence is required when the value exceeds $10,000; it is a subclassification of Mechanical. Roofing and Sheet Metal, Siding is defined as the construction, installation, maintenance or repair of roof systems for buildings and structures, including roof decks and waterproofing for associated parapet walls including flashings and other accessories, and also includes general sheet metal and all types of siding; it is a subclassification of Building Construction, for which the commercial threshold is $50,000. Under R.S. 37:2150.1, a mechanical contractor is defined by reference to work including ventilation systems for projects valued at ten thousand dollars or more. An applicant must designate a qualifying party for each classification and for the Louisiana business and law requirement; the qualifying party must be a principal or full time employee, must satisfy the examination requirements, and the applicant, each principal and each qualifying party must complete an application and pass a background investigation. |
| Reciprocity | The Board's governing law authorizes it to waive the trade portion of the examination requirement for an applicant holding a licence in a comparable classification in another state, as determined by the board, upon written certification from the licensing state that the applicant passed the examination for that classification and is in good standing. The business law requirement may not be waived, and applicants must comply with all other Louisiana licensing requirements. Section 123 separately requires the board to issue a licence without examination to qualifying military members, military spouses and dependents who hold a current and valid occupational licence in another state in an occupation with a similar scope of practice. |
| Renewal | Licences and renewals expire on the anniversary of the date the licence was originally issued. The initial licence certificate is valid for one year, after which the licensee elects a one, two or three year renewal term; licences dependent on insurance requirements or certifications are not eligible for multiple year renewal. There is a fifteen day window after expiration to file a renewal without penalty, after which a delinquent fee of up to fifty dollars applies. Continuing education is required only of residential construction contractors, who must complete a minimum of six hours annually with a board approved provider; the Board's published law and FAQ set no continuing education requirement for commercial, mold remediation or home improvement contractors. |
