| Requirements | MASSACHUSETTS IS ONE OF THE FEW STATES WITH A DEDICATED SHEET METAL BOARD, and the requirement is heavier than most people expect for this trade. JOURNEYPERSON, UNRESTRICTED (J-1). Documentary proof satisfactory to the board of having completed, WITHIN THE TEN YEARS PRECEDING THE APPLICATION: 8,000 HOURS of LICENSED APPRENTICE training AND 750 HOURS of BOARD-APPROVED TRAINING CLASSES, over a period of NOT LESS THAN FIVE YEARS. Three separate conditions, and all three bind. The hours must be served as a LICENSED apprentice. The 750 classroom hours must be board-approved. And the five-year floor means the time cannot be compressed however many hours are worked, this is a longer minimum than the four years most trades require. The ten-year recency window applies to the whole package, so an applicant returning to the trade after a long break may find older hours have aged out. | Reciprocity | The Board of Sheet Metal Workers assesses out-of-state applicants against the same documentary standard.
