Oregon licenses electrical sign work at both levels: the Building Codes Division issues the individual Limited Journeyman Sign Electrician (SIG) license to install and service electrical signs and outline lighting, and the Limited Sign Contractor (CLS) license to the business. A SIG licensee must be employed by a limited sign contractor.
| Requirements | The Limited Journeyman Sign Electrician (SIG), governed by OAR 918-282-0220, allows the holder to install and service electrical signs and outline lighting and must be employed by a limited sign contractor. Qualification is by one of three routes: completion of an approved apprenticeship in Oregon; official transcripts of required classroom training plus verification of 4,000 hours of on-the-job sign electrical experience obtained outside Oregon; or verification of 8,000 hours of on-the-job sign experience obtained outside Oregon, broken down into specific work categories. All applicants must test; the SIG exam is 2 hours, 28 questions, open book. The application fee is $50. Experience is submitted on the division's verification of electrical experience form signed by a verifier, and a high school diploma or GED is required. The published training categories for the SIG license are stockroom and materials handling, pattern and blueprints, layout design, assembly of display, display painting and component parts, display installation, service and maintenance, and transportation and hoisting equipment maintenance and repair. The Limited Sign Contractor (CLS) is the business license for installation and servicing of electrical signs and outline lighting; the applicant must register the business with the Oregon Secretary of State, hold an active Construction Contractors Board license, and employ an appropriate full-time supervisor for the license chosen. The CLS fee is $375. |
| Reciprocity | The division's reciprocal licenses page lists electrical reciprocity only for the General Journeyman Electrician (J), with Arkansas, Idaho, Maine, Montana, Utah, Washington and Wyoming, and the General Supervising Electrician (S), with Arkansas and Utah. The Limited Journeyman Sign Electrician is not listed among the reciprocal licenses. |
| Renewal | The Limited Journeyman Sign Electrician license is renewed every three years on October 1 and requires 4 total hours of continuing education, of which a portion must be from code change (CC) courses. The Limited Sign Contractor license is renewed every three years on July 1. A renewal notice is mailed to the licensee roughly six weeks before expiration. |
