This is a trade where the NATIONAL credential outranks the state one in practical value. CET and QEI are recognised across the country, are required or accepted by many state programmes, and survive a move; a state licence does not. If you are early in the trade in Nevada, get into NEIEP or an equivalent apprenticeship and work toward CET first, the state licence, where required, follows from it more easily than the reverse.
| Requirements | NEVADA IS AMONG THE ROUGHLY 35 STATES THAT REQUIRE ELEVATOR MECHANIC LICENSURE. The programme sits with the state's labour or elevator-safety authority rather than a construction board, because conveyances are regulated as safety equipment. Confirm the exact division and application route with the state before applying, elevator programmes are reorganised more often than most, and the licence may sit under Labor, under Buildings, or under a standalone Elevator Safety Board. THE LICENCE CATEGORIES most states use are the same three: MECHANIC, for construction, maintenance and repair; INSPECTOR, a separate and usually higher credential; and an ACCESSIBILITY or PRIVATE RESIDENCE LIFT category for that narrower equipment. THE CERTIFICATIONS THAT TRAVEL. Three national credentials do most of the work in this trade. CET, Certified Elevator Technician, issued by the National Association of Elevator Contractors, is the mechanic's credential, and a number of states either require it or accept it in place of their own examination. QEI, Qualified Elevator Inspector, from the QEI Training Fund or NAESA, is the inspector's credential and a separate track. CAT covers accessibility and private residence lifts, which is its own licence category in several states. NEIEP, the industry's joint apprenticeship programme, is the usual route to CET. THE CODE IS ASME A17.1, the Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators. State examinations are built on it, and it is what an inspector applies. HOW STATES USUALLY QUALIFY APPLICANTS. Either documented years of supervised elevator work, commonly four years or an equivalent hour count, or possession of a current industry certification such as CET, which many states accept in place of both the experience and the examination. New York's statute, for example, requires an applicant for a mechanic's licence to hold a current CET or an equivalent certification recognised by the commissioner. Check which of the two routes Nevada uses before assuming years of experience alone will qualify. |
| Reciprocity | Formal state-to-state reciprocity is uncommon. What functions as reciprocity is the national certification: a mechanic holding CET, or an inspector holding QEI, can usually satisfy a new state's qualification requirement without re-examination, subject to that state's own application. Confirm with the licensing authority before relying on it. |
| Renewal | State licences renew on the authority's published cycle, generally with continuing education in the current ASME A17.1 code. NAEC and NAESA certifications renew separately on their own cycles, two calendars to track, and letting the certification lapse can put the state licence at risk where the state conditions licensure on holding it. |
