| Requirements | FIRE SPRINKLER WORK IS LICENSED SEPARATELY FROM PLUMBING AND MECHANICAL IN MOST STATES, and it is normally the FIRE MARSHAL rather than a construction board that does it, because the system is life safety equipment, not a building service. In Idaho the licensing body is the Idaho State Fire Marshal, Department of Insurance. THE CREDENTIAL THAT MATTERS ACROSS STATE LINES IS NICET. The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies certifies in AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER SYSTEM LAYOUT and in WATER-BASED SYSTEMS LAYOUT, at Levels I to IV. A large number of states either REQUIRE NICET Level III for the unrestricted licence, or ACCEPT it in place of their own examination, Minnesota, Idaho, Washington, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and South Carolina all do one or the other. Idaho accepts a NICET LEVEL III certification in WATER-BASED SYSTEMS as an ALTERNATIVE to passing the state examination, a genuine shortcut for anyone who already holds it. SO THE STRATEGY FOR A SPRINKLER FITTER IS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER TRADES. In plumbing or electrical the state licence is the asset and it stops at the state line. In fire sprinkler work the NICET certification is the asset: it is national, it is recognised or required by many state programmes, and it is what lets a fitter move between states without starting again. Pursue NICET III in Automatic Sprinkler System Layout as the priority, and treat the state licence as the local wrapper around it. THE OTHER HALF OF THE JOB IS THE CODE. Sprinkler design and installation is governed by NFPA 13, 13R and 13D, and inspection and testing by NFPA 25. Those standards, not a state syllabus, are what the examinations test and what an inspector applies. |
| Reciprocity | Formal state-to-state reciprocity is uncommon in fire protection licensing. What functions as reciprocity is NICET: because so many state programmes require or accept NICET Level III, a fitter holding it can usually qualify in a new state without re-examination, subject to that state's own application, insurance and bonding requirements. Confirm with the fire marshal's office before relying on it. |
