How to get a HVAC technician license in Montana

Requirements, license levels, and the issuing authority, sourced from Montana's official board.

Do not confuse the state mechanical PERMIT or contractor REGISTRATION with a licence, neither authorises a person to practise the trade. For a Montana HVAC technician the credentials that carry weight are EPA 608, a registered apprenticeship, and, where the work crosses over, the state plumbing or electrical licence.

Issuing authority: No statewide HVAC, mechanical or refrigeration license and no state HVAC board. The Montana Department of Labor and Industry, Business Standards Division administers 41 boards and programs and HVAC is not among them. What does exist for HVAC firms is Construction Contractor Registration, administered by the Department's Employment Relations Division, plus state or local mechanical permitting through the Building Codes Program.. RequirementsMONTANA ISSUES NO STATE HVAC LICENCE. The Business Standards Division's professional boards include a BOARD OF PLUMBERS and a STATE ELECTRICAL BOARD, both licensing their trades statewide, but there is no mechanical or HVAC board among them. This is verification by absence against the state's own published list of boards. WHAT THE STATE DOES OPERATE, AND IT IS NOT A LICENCE. A STATE MECHANICAL PERMIT is required for all state-owned agencies, and for certain new buildings, alterations, additions and repairs, before construction commences. That is a permit on the WORK, issued by the Building Standards Division; it certifies nothing about the person doing it. Separately, the Department of Labor and Industry runs CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTOR REGISTRATION, which is a registration for workers' compensation and independent-contractor purposes rather than a trade licence. Neither is an HVAC licence and neither tests HVAC competence. FEDERAL LAYER, which does apply everywhere: EPA SECTION 608 TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION is required to purchase or handle regulated refrigerants, Type I, II, III or Universal, and it does not expire. THE CROSS-TRADE POINT. Montana DOES license plumbers (journeyman: five years or an approved apprenticeship) and electricians (8,000 hours of practical experience) at state level, and both are enforced. An HVAC technician wiring a unit or piping a boiler feed can land inside either regime regardless of job title.
ReciprocityNot applicable at state level, since no state HVAC licence exists. EPA Section 608 certification is federal and transfers into Montana without re-qualifying. Montana's ELECTRICAL journeyman licence, by contrast, is named in both North Dakota's and Nebraska's published reciprocal agreements, and its plumbing board holds journeyman reciprocity with Oregon, Idaho, North Dakota and South Dakota.
RenewalThere is no state HVAC licence to renew and no state continuing-education requirement for HVAC. Mechanical permits are per project. Contractor registration renews on its own cycle with the Department of Labor and Industry. EPA Section 608 certification does not expire.
