Arizona has no individual sheet metal worker licence: the Registrar of Contractors licenses contracting businesses, and its complete list of licence classifications contains sheet metal only as the contractor classifications C-45 (commercial), R-45 (residential) and CR-45 (dual), each held by a business through a qualifying party. Employees working for a licensed Arizona contractor are not separately licensed by the state.
| Requirements | The C-45 (commercial) and R-45 (residential) Sheet Metal classifications each allow the licensee to install and repair sheet metal, cornices, flashings, gutters, leaders, pans, kitchen equipment, duct work, skylights, patented chimneys, metal flues and metal roofing systems. CR-45 allows the scopes of work permitted by both the commercial C-45 and the residential R-45 licences. The Registrar's published License Classification Requirements list two minimum years of hands on and/or managerial experience for C-45, R-45 and CR-45, and require both the Statutes and Rules Exam (SRE) and the Trade Exam. Note that A.R.S. s. 32-1122(E) sets a statutory baseline of four years of practical or management trade experience, at least two of which must be within the last ten years, but expressly authorizes the Registrar to reduce that four year requirement where custom and usage in a particular craft show it to be excessive; the Registrar's own classification table is the operative figure for the sheet metal classifications. Up to two years of accredited technical or manufacturer training may substitute for experience. The licence is held by the business, which must employ a qualifying party who meets the experience and examination requirements, and the applicant must submit and maintain the required bond. |
| Reciprocity | The Registrar's applying for a licence page states that Arizona does not have direct reciprocity with any state, but that the Registrar offers out of state applicants the opportunity to request a waiver of the trade examination by submitting an Out of State Waiver Request Form with the licence application. The Arizona Statutes and Rules Exam cannot be waived unless the proposed qualifying party has been named as a qualifying party on an Arizona ROC licence within the past five years. Note that California's CSLB separately lists Arizona among the states with which it has reciprocal classifications, so the two boards describe the relationship differently. |
| Renewal | Arizona contractor licences are renewed biennially. A.R.S. s. 32-1123.01 requires the Registrar to implement a system of staggered licensure with biennial licence renewal and proration of fees, and the statute schedule provides for an original biennial application and licence fee and a biennial licence renewal fee. Under A.R.S. s. 32-1125 a licence is suspended by operation of law on the next business day following its renewal date if it is not renewed. |
