A sheet metal worker employed by a licensed mechanical contractor works under that licence; someone contracting directly for ductwork normally needs the mechanical credential in their own right. WHERE THE TRADE BOUNDARY ACTUALLY SITS. Fabricating and hanging duct is usually mechanical work. Sheet metal ROOFING and flashing is usually roofing work and can fall under a different licence entirely. Architectural metal, gutters and siding may be neither. The licence follows the application of the metal, not the material. WHAT CARRIES WEIGHT INSTEAD OF A LICENCE. A registered apprenticeship, through the U.S. Department of Labor or a joint apprenticeship committee such as SMART's, plus industry certification in welding and in testing and balancing.
