California licenses electrical sign work at the contracting-business level through the Contractors State License Board's C-45 Sign Contractor classification, and there is no separate state license for an individual sign electrician working for that contractor. The California Department of Industrial Relations electrician certification requirement is stated as applying to electricians who work for a contractor with a class C-10 license, and the DIR page does not extend it to C-45 sign contractors.
| Requirements | The C-45 classification is defined in the California Code of Regulations, Title 16, Division 8, Article 3, under the authority of Business and Professions Code sections 7008 and 7059: a sign contractor fabricates, installs, and erects electrical signs, including the wiring of such electrical signs, and non-electrical signs, including but not limited to post or pole supported signs, signs attached to structures, painted wall signs, and modifications to existing signs. Applicants need at least four years of experience in the classification applied for, credited only at journey level or as a foreman, supervising employee, contractor or owner-builder. CSLB defines a journeyman as a fully qualified, experienced worker, as opposed to a trainee, helper, laborer, assistant or apprentice, who can perform the trade without supervision, or a person who has completed an apprenticeship program. All experience claims must be verified by a qualified and responsible person who directly observed the work. Applicants must pass two examinations, Law and Business plus the trade examination, although a waiver of the examinations may be granted under certain conditions. A $25,000 contractor's bond must be in place before CSLB can issue an active license, reactivate an inactive license, or renew an active license. |
| Reciprocity | CSLB has reciprocity agreements with Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada and North Carolina. The contractor must be applying for a license in a classification that appears on that state's Reciprocal Classifications List. On CSLB's Reciprocal Classifications List, C-45 Electrical Sign appears under Nevada, mapped from Nevada's C-6 / C-6b Erecting Signs / Electrical Signs. Reciprocity waives the trade examination; the applicant still takes the Law and Business portion. |
| Renewal | Active licenses expire every two years and inactive licenses expire every four years. CSLB's general renewal information page does not state a continuing education requirement for renewal. |
