Arizona requires a well driller's license from the Arizona Department of Water Resources, and state law provides that new well construction, including modifications of wells, must be performed under the direct and personal supervision of a licensed well driller.
| Requirements | Arizona Revised Statutes Section 45-595 provides that new well construction, including modifications of wells, must be performed under the direct and personal supervision of a well driller who holds a well driller's license, that an applicant submits the applicant's name, business address and relevant experience to the Director, and that a nontransferable well driller's license is issued if the Director finds that the applicant meets the qualifications established. The statute also provides that a person drilling an exempt well on his own property obtains a single well license at no charge and must follow the applicable small well construction standards, and it caps the licensing fee set by the Director at fifty dollars. ADWR states that well driller licensing exams are administered at the department on the second Friday of every month and that prospective and renewing licensees should contact the Groundwater Permitting and Wells Unit at (602) 771-8527. Separately from licensing, a Notice of Intent to Drill must be filed with ADWR before a new well is drilled or an existing well is deepened or modified, drilling authority is valid for one year, and the driller may begin only when holding the drill card showing the well driller's name and license number.
