Indiana well driller licensing at a glance

RequirementsINDIANA LICENSES THE WELL DRILLER AND THE PUMP INSTALLER SEPARATELY, with a combination licence for those who do both. ELIGIBILITY. Be at least EIGHTEEN years of age; furnish evidence from THREE REFERENCES, of whom TWO must be water well drillers, pump installers or licensed plumbing contractors; successfully complete a COMPETENCY EXAMINATION; and pay the licence fee. FEES. $100 licence fee, plus a $25 administrative fee per test. The DNR Division of Water publishes the approved continuing education class list and the register of licensed water well drilling contractors. A well driller also works inside the groundwater-protection rules that govern well construction, abandonment and reporting; the licensing agency is normally the same body that receives the well log, so the licence and the reporting duty travel together.
ReciprocityThe Division of Water publishes guidance for DISTANT CONTRACTORS operating in Indiana, which is the route for an out-of-state driller; it is an application process rather than an automatic waiver of the competency examination. Confirm current terms with the division.
RenewalAfter licensure a minimum of SIX HOURS of approved continuing education must be completed during each TWO-YEAR cycle, or TWELVE HOURS for a holder of the combination water well driller and pump installer licence. The division publishes the approved class list.
