An Indiana HVAC technician's genuinely portable credentials are EPA 608, industry certifications such as NATE, and a registered apprenticeship. Where the work crosses into plumbing, the state license is not optional, and that boundary, not the job title, is what an inspector applies.
| Requirements | INDIANA ISSUES NO STATE HVAC LICENCE. Indiana licenses PLUMBING at state level through the Professional Licensing Agency, but does NOT license this trade: there is no state board and no state credential, so the requirement is set by the municipality or county where the work is performed. Indianapolis and the larger cities operate their own contractor registrations and require permitted work to be pulled by a registered contractor; many smaller jurisdictions require only that the work meet the adopted code and pass inspection. WHAT ACTUALLY APPLIES. First, the municipality, Indianapolis and other cities require contractor registration for permitted mechanical work. Second, and this one is federal and applies everywhere: EPA SECTION 608 TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION is required to purchase or handle regulated refrigerants, in Type I, II, III or Universal, and it does not expire. THIRD, AND THE TRAP THAT CATCHES HVAC TECHNICIANS HERE: work touching potable water or drainage piping can fall under the INDIANA STATE PLUMBING LICENCE, which is real, examined and carries a statutory penalty for working without it. Piping a boiler, a condensate line into a drain, or a make-up water connection can put a technician on the plumbing side of that line regardless of their job title. |
