Massachusetts licenses sprinkler fitters as individuals through the Bureau of Pipefitters, Refrigeration Technicians, and Sprinkler Fitters, in three tiers: Apprentice Sprinkler Fitter, Journeyman Sprinkler Fitter and Fire Protection Sprinkler Fitter Contractor.
| Requirements | The Apprentice Sprinkler Fitter licence requires a 2 inch by 2 inch photo and documentation that the applicant is employed by a Massachusetts Sprinkler Contractor, with a $40 non-refundable application fee. The Bureau states that this licence allows the holder to perform sprinkler work under the direct supervision of a journeyman or sprinkler contractor, and that licensed apprentices are limited to two renewals unless otherwise approved by the Bureau. The Journeyman Sprinkler Fitter licence requires a copy of a high school diploma or equivalent, a 2 inch by 2 inch passport-style photo, and proof of either documentation from an employer of not less than 8,000 hours in Massachusetts as a duly licensed OPSI Sprinkler Apprentice working under a Massachusetts Sprinkler Contractor plus documentation from an approved school of 144 hours of sprinkler fitting study per year of apprenticeship, or equivalent out-of-state documentation. The applicant must be approved by a majority vote of the Bureau, pay a $75 non-refundable application fee and pass the Sprinkler Fitter Journeyman examination. The Fire Protection Sprinkler Fitter Contractor licence requires documentation from an employer of five years in the fire protection sprinkler system business in a management position, documentation that the applicant is an owner, partner, officer or in a full-time management position of a fire protection sprinkler system company, documentation from an approved school of 300 hours of sprinkler fitting study, proof of United States citizenship or work authorisation, a minimum age of 18, a $100 non-refundable application fee, and the contractor examination. The Bureau states this licence allows the holder to have a regular place of business and to employ duly licensed people to perform sprinkler work. Contractors renewing must submit a certificate of liability insurance including completed operations coverage of at least $500,000 per occurrence naming the Division of Occupational Licensure as certificate holder. |
| Reciprocity | The Journeyman Sprinkler Fitter application accepts documentation from an out-of-state employer listing work experience and certification requirements that are equivalent to the Journeyman Sprinkler Fitter prerequisites, along with a Certificate of Good Standing if available, in place of the Massachusetts apprenticeship hours. |
| Renewal | Under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 146, Section 85 a licence continues in force until the date of birth of the licensee occurring more than twelve months but not more than twenty-four months after the date of the licence, and renewals then fall on the licensee's birthday in alternating years, giving an effectively biennial cycle. Renewal fees are $20 for an apprentice, $50 for a journeyman or technician, and $75 for a master or contractor. Renewal notices are sent by email and mail 60 days before expiration. Licences not renewed at the expiration date become void and can only be restored by retesting after a year has elapsed. |
