| Requirements | NEW MEXICO DOES NOT LICENSE APPLIANCE REPAIR TECHNICIANS. No state board issues an appliance repair licence, there is no state examination and there is no state experience requirement for the trade as such. Almost no state in the country does. WHAT IS GENUINELY MANDATORY, AND IT IS FEDERAL. EPA SECTION 608 TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION, under the Clean Air Act, is required of anyone who services, maintains, repairs or disposes of appliances containing REGULATED REFRIGERANTS. That covers refrigerators, freezers, wine coolers, ice machines and any sealed system a repair technician opens. It applies in all fifty states and the District of Columbia, it is required to PURCHASE regulated refrigerant, and IT DOES NOT EXPIRE. THE FOUR TYPES. Type I covers small appliances, the category most domestic appliance repair falls into. Type II covers high-pressure systems, Type III low-pressure, and UNIVERSAL covers all three. A technician working on domestic refrigeration needs Type I at minimum; Universal is the practical choice for anyone who may also touch air conditioning. WHAT ELSE APPLIES IN NEW MEXICO. New Mexico DOES license the mechanical or HVAC trade at state level, through the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department, Construction Industries Division (CID).. That matters because the boundary is the work, not the job title: a technician who moves from repairing a sealed domestic appliance to installing, replacing or altering fixed HVAC equipment can cross into licensed territory. Repairing a refrigerator is not HVAC contracting; replacing a condensing unit generally is. GAS APPLIANCES ARE THEIR OWN QUESTION. Work on gas ranges, dryers and water heaters can fall under gas fitting or plumbing licensing, which many states do license and enforce. Check the gas connection separately from the appliance. |
