The authority is the New Mexico Construction Industries Division (CID), Regulation and Licensing Department. ATI's licence register carries no meaningful number of sign-classified records for New Mexico, which is consistent with sign work being performed under the general electrical credential rather than a separate one, though absence in a register is weaker evidence than a board's own classification list, so confirm with the board. WHAT THIS MEANS IN PRACTICE. A worker installing, connecting or servicing electric signs needs the state's electrical credential appropriate to the work, the journeyman or equivalent licence where the state issues one to individuals, or employment under a licensed electrical contractor where the state licenses only businesses. The requirements, hours and examinations are exactly those set out on this site's New Mexico electrician page, because they are the same licence. THE SECOND PERMIT PEOPLE FORGET. A sign almost always needs a SIGN PERMIT from the local planning or zoning authority in addition to the electrical permit, and the two are issued by different departments on different criteria. A correctly licensed electrician can still be stopped for want of the zoning approval. AND THE STRUCTURAL SIDE. Pole signs, projecting signs and large wall signs frequently require a structural or building permit for the attachment, which is separate again from both. |
