The experience-versus-training trade-off is the part worth planning: 80 hours of vocational training saves nothing on its own, but paired with six years it qualifies, while 240 hours cuts the requirement to four years. Virginia also operates a Universal License Recognition route for people already licensed in another state, which is separate from the negotiated reciprocity agreements below.
| Requirements | VIRGINIA LICENSES THE INDIVIDUAL TRADESMAN, and the Board for Contractors runs one Tradesmen Program covering electrical, plumbing, HVAC, gas fitting, water well construction, elevator mechanics, backflow prevention and building energy analysis. JOURNEYMAN, FOUR ROUTES, AND YOU PICK THE ONE THAT FITS YOUR HISTORY. Practical experience and formal vocational training trade off against each other: four years of practical experience plus 240 hours of formal vocational training; OR five years plus 160 hours; OR six years plus 80 hours. Two further routes run through education: an associate degree or certificate of completion from at least a two-year program in a tradesman-related field at an accredited community college or technical school, plus TWO years of practical experience; or a bachelor's degree or certificate of completion from an accredited college or university in an engineering curriculum related to the trade, plus ONE year of practical experience. THE VOCATIONAL TRAINING MUST COVER THE RIGHT CODE. For this trade the course must cover the National Electrical Code. MASTER: one year of practical experience as a LICENSED JOURNEYMAN in the trade. The same education-based routes are available with adjusted experience. EXAMINATION FEES are capped by regulation: the examination shall not exceed $100 for the journeyman's examination and $125 for the master examination, in any of the trades. |
| Reciprocity | Virginia holds negotiated agreements, each with its own terms, and an applicant must meet every term of the agreement and submit verification of licensure from the out-of-state board. For ELECTRICAL these include: Alabama (Electrical Contractor license, examination reciprocity toward the Virginia Master Electrical Tradesman); District of Columbia (journeyman and master, license AND examination reciprocity); Kentucky (Electrician and Master Electrician, examination reciprocity); Maryland (Master Electrical Tradesman, examination reciprocity); West Virginia (journeyman and master, examination reciprocity); North Carolina (Unlimited treated as equivalent to Class A and Intermediate to Class B, toward the Virginia Master Electrical Tradesman plus a Class A or Class B contractor business license); and Ohio (Master Electrical, with the Ohio Business and Law paper recognised against Virginia's Advanced and General Law examination). |
| Renewal | Licenses issued to electricians, gas fitters, liquefied petroleum gas fitters, natural gas fitter providers, HVAC tradesmen and plumbers expire THREE YEARS from the last day of the month in which they were issued. As a condition of renewal, every journeyman and master tradesman must complete a continuing education course in EACH discipline in which they hold a license, so a holder of two designations takes two courses. |
