| Requirements | Contractor applicants must meet the journeyman requirements plus one additional year of experience in the mechanical trade, and pass the contractor exam (technical trade + business and law). Active contractors must carry a $5,000 corporate surety bond payable to the CIB and $50,000 commercial general liability insurance. Ground Source Piping requires certification with no exam. |
| Reciprocity | Yes as a framework, but the Construction Industries Board names no states. OAC 158:50-9-6 ('Mechanical journeyman and contractor licenses by reciprocity') requires an applicant to confirm that a written reciprocity agreement exists between the applicant's state and Oklahoma for the license sought; the Mechanical Examiners Committee reviews and the Board decides. Conditions: the other state's licensure requirements must be substantially the same or equivalent (weighing trade-category regulation, experience required to sit, continuing education, adopted codes and examination rigour and passing score); the other state must reciprocally recognise Oklahoma licenses; the applicant must have been currently licensed and have lawfully practised for the immediately preceding one year; no discipline pending in any jurisdiction; and the applicant's license must itself have been obtained by examination rather than through another state's own reciprocity or waiver. A contractor applicant under a written agreement is first granted a journeyman license by reciprocity and must then pass the Oklahoma Business and Law examination for the contractor license. The Board does not publish a roster of the states it currently holds written agreements with. Where no agreement exists, OAC 158:50-9-4.1 provides an exam-equivalency route: a mechanical journeyman or contractor from a state without an Oklahoma reciprocal agreement or without statewide licensing may be eligible for exam equivalency in the category of the home-state license, skipping the Oklahoma journeyman exam (or, for contractors, the technical trade section, but not the Business and Law section), on a certified letter from the home jurisdiction confirming current good-standing licensure, license category, a passing score of 70% or better and no pending discipline. |
| Renewal | Annual, on the licensee's birth month. OAC 158:50-9-3(a) provides that all licenses shall have a duration of no more than one year and shall expire on the last day of the birth month of the licensee each year. Continuing education: OAC 158:50-9-7(a)(1) requires 6 hours every three years (36 months) preceding the license expiration date. Mandated topics are codes and revisions adopted by the OUBCC and other trade-related subject matter, including examination materials, manufacturers' installation of equipment or parts, the licensing Act, the trade regulations in this Chapter and the rules of the Construction Industries Board in OAC 158:10, and other trade or safety related subject matter approved by the Committee. New licensees are exempt from continuing education for three years from the date they passed the licensing examination (OAC 158:50-9-7(a)(5)). Fees under OAC 158:50-9-2(b): contractor application $30, initial license $300, renewal $200, renewal late fee $100; journeyman application $25, initial license $50, renewal $75, renewal late fee $25; apprentice application $5 and registration $20. |
