For an electrician working the northern plains, North Dakota is the hub of the regional reciprocity network: thirteen states in and, through their own agreements, a wide onward reach. The requirement that you passed a written examination where you came from is the one that catches people who were grandfathered in elsewhere.
| Requirements | JOURNEYMAN ELECTRICIAN. 8,000 HOURS of experience WHICH CANNOT BE OBTAINED IN LESS THAN THREE YEARS, served REGISTERED AS AN APPRENTICE ELECTRICIAN under the supervision of a licensed electrician, plus successful completion of apprentice electrician training. The three-year floor is a real constraint independent of the hours: an apprentice working heavy overtime cannot reach the license in two years, because the board caps how fast the time may be accumulated. REGISTRATION FIRST. The hours count only while registered as an apprentice with the board, so registration is the step that starts the clock. MASTER ELECTRICIAN requires 10,000 hours of supervised experience. The board publishes its Laws, Rules and Wiring Standards booklet in full. |
| Reciprocity | NORTH DAKOTA HAS ONE OF THE MOST GENEROUS PUBLISHED AGREEMENTS IN THE COUNTRY, and no written examination is required for reciprocal licensure where the conditions are met. JOURNEYMAN reciprocity with THIRTEEN states: Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. MASTER reciprocity with three: Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota. CONDITIONS. You must have passed the WRITTEN EXAMINATION in the state you are reciprocating from; hold a valid license that is current, active and in good standing; have maintained CONTINUOUS LICENSURE FOR ONE YEAR before the request; and document 8,000 hours (journeyman) or 10,000 hours (master) of supervised experience. An applicant from a state with no continuing education requirement must show completion of an 8-hour North Dakota-approved code class. ONE HARD EXCLUSION: an applicant who has FAILED the written examination in the state they are reciprocating from is NOT eligible. |
